Khaliyat al Nahal (Honey Comb)

Khaliyat al Nahal , also known as Honey Comb Bread, is a soft and fluffy Middle Eastern Bread Made of small pillowy buns arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Each bun is traditionally filled with cheese or sweet filling custard or or dates but  I prefer cheese then brushed with egg wash and baked untill golden.





So lets dive into this mouth watering delicious khaliyat al Nahal.

To make khaliyat al Nahal we need,

Ingrediants:

For the dough

  • 3 Cups All purpose flour or Plain flour
  • 2tsp instant yeast
  • 3 tbsb sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  •  1/2 cup warm milk as you need
  • if you need you add little bit when needing the dough
  • 1/4 melted butter or ghee
  • 1 egg
  • 2tbsp plain yogurt

For the filling you need 

  • cream cheese ( kiri ) or 
  • laughing cow cheese.

For brushing

  • 1 egg yolk (mixed with 1tbsp milk)
  • sesame or nigella seeds

For the syrup 

  • 1/2 cup sugar 
  • 1/4 water
  • 1tbsp honey(optional)
  • 1/4 lemon Juice

Method 

  • Mix flour salt yeast in a bowl 
  • Add warm milk ghee or butter and yogurt. mix and well and knead it untill it forms the soft dough if the dough is thick you can add little bit more milk.
  • Cover it and let it rise for 1 hour.
  • Form the Buns
  • Divide the dough into small equal  size balls.
  • flatten each ball and place the cheese cube in the centre it if the cubes or big you can cut into half and seal the bun and shape into a small ball.
  • Assemble 
  • Grease a round a baking pan.
  • Arrange the balls leaving little gap in between so the dough can expand.
  • cover it and let them rise for 30 minutes.
  • Bake:
  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees
  • Brush buns wit egg wash
  • sprinkles the desire seeds sesame or nigella seeds
  • Bake it untill 20-25 minutes or untill golden colour.
  • Make syrup:
  • Boil water and sugar. add lemon juice and simmer until 5 to 7minutes untill  slightly thick.
  • Turn off heat.
  • Once the buns are baked pour the the syrup generously on the warm buns you can stir the honey into the syrup but its optional.
  • I prefer only sugar syrup.
  •  Let it COOL before serving 
  • your khaliyat al Nahal is ready you can enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee or you can eat just as that your choice
